Tommie Jean Neely died Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Grace Healthcare in Clarksville. She was born January 11, 1938 in Smith County, TN to the late Cecil and Modena Goolsby Chaffin. Tommie was married to the late Slaughter Neely, Jr. of Clarksville.
Tommie graduated from Lebanon High School in 1955 and Draughon's College in 1957. She worked for WSM's National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Nashville, TN. She later owned and operated Neely's Clerical Agency in Clarksville. After becoming interested in renovating homes, Tommie worked as a painting contractor in the Montgomery County area for many years. Tommie and her husband, Slaughter, were active members of the Marine Corp League of Clarksville.
Tommie's greatest joy was in caring for her family. She is survived by son, Ken Farmer (Annie), of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Benjamin Farmer (Kristina) of Cincinnati, OH; Sarah Austin (Charles) of Clarksville; Jonathon Farmer (Mary) of Nashville and Michael Farmer of Watertown, NY; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Farmer, Javon, Lilliana and Charlize Austin. She is also survived by her brother, Jared Chaffin; sister, Ellen Chaffin Warren (Randall) of Lebanon, TN; nephews, Anthony Chaffin (Julia), David Chaffin (Karen), Jimmy Chaffin (Rachel); nieces, Laura and Lydia Warren, all of Lebanon; five great nephews and a great niece. In addition to her parents and husband, a brother, Jimmy Carlton Chaffin, and sister-in-law, Callie Climer Chaffin, preceded her in death.
Tommie was fortunate to have many friends including Charles Uveino of Clarksville and Marion Sloan of Lebanon, both of whom were extremely kind, comforting and supportive to Tommie and family members during Tommie's illness. Tommie also enjoyed a lifelong, special, loving bond with cousin, Reba Murphy, of Mesa, AZ.
Sykes Funeral Home in Clarksville is in charge of arrangements. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, January 26, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 27, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Benjamin Farmer, Sarah (Farmer) Austin, Jonathon Farmer, Michael Farmer, Tony Chaffin and Jimmy Chaffin. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jared Chaffin, David Chaffin, Charles Austin, Dustin Chaffin, Jared C. Chaffin, Dallas Chaffin, Jordan Chaffin and Justin Chaffin.
