Nellie Jewel Sykes Pitt, 91, of the Stewart community in Houston County, died June 4, 2014 at Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis with her beloved children at her side. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at Stewart United Methodist Church. Family and friends will visit an hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Pitt was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Houston County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Isham and Annie Meek Sykes. She was married 66 years to Maxwell M. (Mack) Pitt, who passed away in 2007. She was also predeceased by her sister Rose Sykes Rumfelt and two sons-in-law, Glyn (Buck) Gore and James Shipley Jr.
Survivors are one brother, Gerald Sykes, Stewart; two sisters-in-law, Billie Pitt, Fayetteville, Tenn. and Hilda Briscoe, Memphis; a son, David Maxwell Pitt, Gulfport, MS; four daughters, Joy Gore, Bartlett, Tenn.; Cheryl Harber (David), Germantown, Tenn.; Kathy Shipley, Independence, Miss.; and Jacqueline Martin (Charles), Stewart; six grandchildren and their spouses; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; beloved step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Martin and Shipley families; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Pitt was a long time member of Stewart United Methodist Church and was active in the Stewart Community Center for many years. She was a loyal fan of the UT Lady Vols and enjoyed reading, sewing, and making quilts.
In her youth she attended Fairfield School and Stewart School in Houston County. As a teenager she was chosen for the All Star basketball team and graduated in the Houston County High School Class of 1940. During World War II she served her country in a defense plant manufacturing life boats. Mrs. Pitt was a retiree from Kroger with 25 years of service and a member of Retail Clerks Union Local 1529.
