Mary “Jean” Greene (aka Mama Greene) was born to Thomas Theodore Baxter and Evelyn Devers Baxter on May 2, 1932 and went to her heavenly home on December 17, 2020. She grew up in Southside and graduated from Montgomery Central High School. She was the youngest of four children. Her siblings included Louise Baxter Parker, Martha Baxter Lachowicz, and T.T. Baxter. She married Roy Brake Greene (aka Daddy Greene) on December 3, 1955 and went on to have four boys, Les Paul, Neal, Audey, and Denny Greene, in addition to 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, not to mention the many honorary grandkids over the years. Roy was the love of her life, and aptly named her the War Department because she always kept him in check. She loved her family fiercely and always had a home cooked meal on the ready. She was a hard worker, working in a factory most of her life, and when not at work she was on the farm in the tobacco fields. She was saved at the age of 13 and was a long time member at Marion United Methodist Church where she rarely missed a Sunday and was often caught trying to walk to church in her later years. She never passed up a ballgame or sporting event, or the chance to hold a baby or babysit. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the lights of her life and she told everyone who would listen about them. She kept the phone lines hot at all times staying in contact with her friends and family, including all of her innumerable first cousins. She was also a VIP guest at every funeral home in town as she never missed paying her respects to lost friends and loved ones...or the chance to people watch and socially mingle.
Aside from her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, three siblings, and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her four sons: Les Paul (Sarah), Neal (Kathy), Audey (Leah), and Denny (Sandy) Greene; grandchildren Nick (Chasidy) Greene , LesLee (Eric) Blackwell, Katie (Amerson) Pegram, Brandon Greene, Dana Greene, Stetson (Sara) Greene, and Cody (Mallory) Greene; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Sykes Funeral Home from 3-6pm, followed by visitation on Sunday from 12-2 at Marion United Methodist Church with the funeral at 2pm. Pallbearers will include her four sons and four grandsons.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions can be made to Marion United Methodist Church.
