Margaret McCollom McWhorter, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 following a lengthy illness.

Family and friends will be celebrating her life at Hopewell Baptist Church on Monday at 1pm with Reverend David Mackens officiating. Visitation will be at Sykes Funeral Home on Sunday from 2pm-5pm and at Hopewell on Monday from 11am until the hour of the service.

Margaret was born January 24, 1925 in Dickson County to Isham and Clara (Shelton) McCollom. She grew up in Slayden and moved to Cunningham in 1944, following her marriage to Cecil McWhorter, her husband of nearly 50 years.

She was employed at BF Goodrich/Vulcan for 52 years where she made many lasting friendships. Due to her ceaseless energy and love of people, she began a second career as a Product Demonstrator when she was in her 80's.

She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and was active in the choir and the Ladies Bible Study group which were sources of friendship and fellowship for her entire adult life.

She loved her home and family and enjoyed spending time cooking, gardening and entertaining.

Margaret is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Andrew Abernathy (Palmyra); her granddaughter, Sonya and her husband CSM Gary DeSilva and their children Nick and Zack (Hilliard, OH); her grandson, Jeremy Ellis (Palmyra) and his children Tristen and Hunter; her step-grandson Brett Abernathy, his wife, Anne and son Dalan (Freeland, WA). She has one surviving brother, Graham McCollom and his wife, Betty (Gallatin) and a dear sister-in-law, Doris Bumpus (Cunningham).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil and 5 siblings, Harry, George, Christine Allen, Helen LaFever and Dorothy Bryant.

The family is thankful for the many friends, neighbors, caregivers and medical professionals who have provided assistance, comfort and care throughout Margaret's illness.

Pallbearers will be Larry Ellis, AB Baggett, James Black, Arnold Hodges, Curtis Rodenhaber and Terry Richards.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church, 2180 HWY 13, Cunningham, TN 37052.
