Lonnie H. Bumpus, age 89, of Cunningham, died Friday, November 22, 2013 at Gateway Medical Center. Sykes Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Sykes Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Falls officiating. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2013 and 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the funeral home.
He was born on September 13, 1924 in Cunningham, TN to the late Finis W. and May Dunlavy Bumpus. He was also preceded in death by son, Lynn Corlew Bumpus; sisters, Lorene Bumpus, Nora D. Jackson and Elma B. Lane.
Lonnie knew from an early age that he wanted to be a farmer and he and his brother, Jack farmed together as Bumpus Brothers and they were honored to be selected Master conservationist and Farm Family of the year. He loved nature, the land, his family and his church.
He was a member, former treasurer and trustee of Martha's Chapel UMC, past director of Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Supervisor of Montgomery County Soil Conservation. He was a charter member of Central Civitan Club for 55 years and served a Montgomery County Commissioner for 38 years (1960 - 1998). He was also a member of the Cattlemen's Assoication and served on the Board of Directors of Clarksville Memorial Hospital for 18 years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris J. McWhorter Bumpus; sons, Lewis D. (Janet) Bumpus of Clarksville, Michael B. (Julia) Baggett of Riverside, CA; brother, Jack D. (Sydney) Bumpus; grandchildren, Lewis Dudley (Jennifer) Bumpus, Jr., Lonnie Thomas (Kisha) Bumpus, Michael R. Baggett, Jimmy Baggett, Angela (David) Troutman, April (John) Campbell, Christine (Saun) Maroney, Lori Carroll; great-grandchildren, Marissa Beth Bumpus, Oliver Nash Campbell, Graham Lewis Troutman and Kaylee Rose Baggett.
