LeRoy Benjamin Dodd, 83, retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Nashville. He succumbed to pneumonia after a battle with bone and prostate cancer. A memorial service will be held for him in the spring 2013, with place and date to be announced.
Mr. Dodd is survived by his son, Stuart Brooks Dodd; two grandsons, Benjamin and Stephen Dodd, all of Clarksville; a brother Troy Dodd of Memphis; and several nieces and nephews.
LeRoy Dodd was born on May 24, 1929, in McNary County, Tennessee to Mary Lennie Harden and James Franklin Dodd. They, as well as his wife of 52 years, Lenos Anna Durham Dodd (2007) preceded him in death.
Young Mr. Dodd enlisted in the Navy in 1944, and subsequently served in the Army Reserves and Air Force Reserves. During this time, he began working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Lenos, who was a nurse, and encouraged him to enter nursing school. After its completion in 1959, LeRoy applied, and was accepted into the Army Nursing Corps. This began his successful career in the Army, which included tours in Germany and Vietnam, and his attaining rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1977.
Mr. Dodd’s last assignment was to Fort Campbell, and he made his home here in Clarksville for the last 40 years to raise his family and be near his grandsons, whom he treasured dearly. He was an avid fisherman and raised hunting beagles. He was active in the community, voicing his opinions at many city council meetings and in letters to the editor of the Leaf Chronicle. LeRoy also supported the many activities of his late wife, Lenos, as she volunteered and served the community in a variety of arenas. His ashes will be interred with those of his wife
