John Douglas Stephen, 89, Clarksville, ( formally of Newtown , PA ) died Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Gateway Medical Center with his devoted daughter and son-in-law by his side.
He was born on March 26, 1923 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England to the late John Douglas Stephen and Ann Chalmers Stephen, Newcastle -Upon -Tyne, England.
He served in WW II in the British Royal Navy from 1942-1946. He came to the United States via ship through New York City. He married his pen pal, Anne Bryant Stephen in 1949. He became a naturalized American Citizen in 1953. He was retired from Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ, where he worked as a Chauffeur for 26 years. He loved his job and never thought of it as work because he loved to drive. In his retirement years he enjoyed gardening, travelling, watching soccer, tennis , boxing, car racing and politics on television, reading the paper and doing crosswords. He loved the outdoors and animals. He had a terrific sense of humor and enjoyed British Comedies. He had a very easy going personality and got along with everyone he worked with and met. He loved being close to his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anne Bryant Stephen, six brothers-in -law, two sisters-in laws and their spouses. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Susan Stephen Pender, Clarksville; son-in-law, Gil Pender, Clarksville ; grandson, Stephen Ogilvie Pender, Clarksville ; granddaughter, Kristen Anne Pender, Clarksville ; sister in law, Norma Lee Holland, Crozet, VA and cousins Jean (John) Chalmers Halliday , Angus (Pat) Chalmers , Jim (Margret) Chalmers ,all of Scotland and another cousin in Australia ; three nephews and four nieces.
