Joetta Carol Smith Dinsmore passed away at her home Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Visitation will be today from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sykes Funeral Home and Thursday from 9:00 AM to the time of the service at 11:00 AM.
Joetta was born January 3, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Joe Smith and the late Madeline Webb Smith. Joetta was raised in Martin, Tennessee, and attended the University of Tennessee at Martin where she was a varsity cheerleader. She finished her education at Austin Peay State University with a double major in English and PE and a Masters of Arts in English. She was a dedicated teacher for 29 years at Montgomery Central High School where she taught junior English, senior English, and AP English. During her tenure at Montgomery Central, she taught journalism and started the literary magazine, the Montage. Joetta will also be remembered by her students and faculty for her beautiful voice, which she shared in class and in many talent shows. She finished her career at Kenwood High School, teaching English, and at Northwest High School as librarian.
Joetta was a loving wife, sister, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Michael Dinsmore; daughters, Mayme (Jason) Stephenson and Alice (Brian) Poor; three grandchildren, Ian, Wren and Lily; brother, Steve Smith (Cathy); nephew, Brad (Gena) Smith and four great-nephews, Tory, Tyler, Josh, and Jason. After her retirement, Joetta spent her time making quilts for her family members and friends, traveling with her husband and family, and remodeling houses with her friend and business partner, Doris Yarbro.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in her name to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
