SGM (Ret) James "Sam" Samuel Winters, age 82, of Clarksville, TN died on Monday, October 21, 2013 at his residence. Sykes Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. A visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Sykes Funeral home. The Funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Resthaven Memorial Gardens with Bro. Willie Lyle officiating. Entombment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Sam was born April 6, 1931 in Clarksville, TN to the late Walton and Ora Winters of Clarksville, TN. He was also preceded in death by brother, Milton Winters and daughter, Vicki Ray.

Sam was a 30 year U.S. Army Veteran. During his career, his tours led him to Fort Carson, CO; Fort Jackson, SC; Fort Riley, KS; Vicenza, Italy; Saigon, South Vietnam and Taipei, Taiwan. During the Vietnam Campaign, he worked directly for General William Westmorland, Commander, Military Assistance Command-Vietnam. Throughout his military career he received numerous awards, most notably the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; and the Legion of Merit. He was an avid motorcyclist and was the founder of Warioto Wings here in Clarksville. His diligence earned him the distinguished honor of being the District Director for the Gold Wing Road Rider Association for the State of TN. He was a longtime member of Sango UMC, a life member of the American Legion Post 233 the local VFW post 4895 and the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nancy E. Gerth Winters; sister, Betty Abercrombie of Clarksville; sons, Michael (Marcia) Winters, Kenny (Marilyn) Winters; daughter, Linda (Don) McKnight of Columbia, SC; step-children, Robert Joe (Iwako) Hester, Lisa (Jerry) Sweeney, Michael Thomas Gerth, Teresa Watts, Richard Gerth; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Military will serve as Pallbearers.
