Franklin Herndon

Franklin Delano Herndon, 78, Florida, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at Gateway Medical Center. The funeral will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday at Sykes Funeral Home Chapel . Burial will be in Gum Springs Baptist Church . Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Sykes Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Herndon was born on November 12, 1932 in Camden, TN. son of the late Fred and Beulah Herndon. While in the US Army, his tours were Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and Okinawa. He retired in September of 1974 as an SFC.After retiring from the military he pursued his interest in operating a small business in the Cunningham community. This business provided him the opportunity for fellowship and ministry to families within the surrounding communities. He had a benevolent heart for people in need. He always enjoyed engaging in discussions with people, and often shared a variety of stories related to his experiences. He is survived by his wife Mildred Jean Herndon, his siblings Wayne Herndon and Patsy Gonzales. His children are Steve D. Herndon, Gary A. Herndon, Michael D. Herndon, Scarlet S. Carter, Susan K. Leavell and Janet F. Loverchio. His grandchildren are Jessica Pettigrew,Christy Velez, James Carter, Jamie Dales, Keri Lehman, Jared Herndon, Chelsea Nelson, Alisha Herndon, Danielle Herndon, Shayn Herndon, Billy Carter and Alec Loverchio.
