Dan Thomopoulos, age 86, of Clarksville, TN passed away April 22, 2016. He was born June 24, 1929 in Chicago, IL.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Namie, his children Richard Thomopoulos of Nashville, TN his daughter Nancy Williams and son-in-law Chris Williams of Dallas, TX, his brother Nick Thomopoulos, sister-in-law Elaine Thomopoulos, sister Margaret Faklis, brother-in-law John Faklis all of Chicago, IL. He is preceded by his sisters Catherine Hiles and Olga Bancoft of Chicago, IL.
He served 4 years with the Marines and had a 22 year career in the US Army. He retired as a 1st Sergeant with the 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne division, Air Assault. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War serving two tours where he earned several medals, including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal with “V” device, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 6 campaign stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Master Parachutist Badge.
Life after the military included working at Smithfield Manufacturing, Inc. for 18 years. In his retirement he traveled with his wife Namie back to her home country of Japan, trips to Hawaii, and Europe. He was an animal lover and would rescue stray dogs to provide them a loving home.
While growing up in Chicago he and his siblings would attend Greek school after going to regular school, they attended St. George Greek Orthodox Church. He enjoyed all sports, but loved his Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and the Tennessee Volunteers.
