Bernard F. Stafford, age 90 of Clarksville passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Spring Meadows Nursing Home. Sykes Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. There will be no services. He will be cremated and buried in the family cemetery by his parents in Riverview Cemetery in Oxford, NY
He was born January 15, 1924 in Oxford, NY to the late Robert E. and Hazel Gifford Stafford.
He graduated from Oxford Academy in June 1941 and then Oxford Tool and Die in December 1941. He started work as a machinist at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, NY working on the cannons in the P39 aircraft. He was then drafted in late 1942 and entered the US Army at Ft. Niagara, NY in the early part of 1943. He received his basic and advanced training in Texas with the 97th Division. After training he was sent to Texas A& M for specialized training. He was later sent to Camp Campbell, KY to join the newly formed XXII Corps Headquarters. The Corp was sent at once to join Patton on his conquest of the Rhineland in central Germany. On V.E. Day the Corp was at the Czech border and was ordered into Czechoslovakia for a year of occupation. Returning to the states, he was honorably discharged at Ft. Dix, NJ in April 1946.
He started work in the Laboratory of Sheffield Farms (Kraft Foods) in January 1947. On April 19, 1947 he married Irene Green in Binghamton, NY.
After 40 years he retired from Kraft Foods as their Purchasing Manager and he and Irene moved to TN.
He enjoyed dancing (several years of ballroom and 31 years of modern western). He and Irene danced in several states and in Germany. He was a former vestry member of St. Paul's church in Oxford, NY.
Mr. Stafford was preceded in death by his parents and 4 year old grandson, Jason Townsend.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Irene Greene Stafford; son, MSG (Ret) Bernard F. (Katrina) Stafford of TN; daughter, Linda (CWo4 (Ret) Edward) Townsend of Florida; sister, Roberta Amber Stafford of Florida; grandsons, Eric Townsend of Oregon, Brian and Ben Stafford of TN; granddaughter, Jessaca Townsend of Florida.
